One of the more popular, and sometimes overused, photo styles we see in print ads and TV commercials is the splash of color. Typically, the entire photo or video is grayscale or sepia tone, except for the product or person highlighted in color. That makes the subject pop out from the screen. Here’s how to do the same effect on your Mac. Splashes Of Color Imagine for a moment what kind of effort was required back to produce color splashes back in the days of film, long before the Mac and Photoshop became the workhorse of digital photography.
All you need today is an inexpensive app on the Mac, a digital photo and a few minutes. Color photo editor. Drop in a digital photo, turn the entire image into grayscale (or an image with any kind of color tone you choose). Then, select the area, object, or person on the photo and brush the colors back in. If that sounds just a little too easy, well, it’s not. It is that easy. Handy sliders give you controls over the colors and the image grayscale or tone.

Not bad for about two minutes of work, right? Here’s another sample but this one is a bit more complicated. The iSplash app doesn’t care much about the type of photo file beings used and handles PNG, JPG, TIFF, BMP, and even GIF files.

Grayscale and color tone settings can be saved and reused. Seriously, I don’t know how much easier it could get to drop splashes of color into a grayscale or black and white photo than iSplash. It’s something of a one-trick pony app as adding splashes of color is about all it does, but it’s simple to use, results are superb, and it’s priced right.
