Mbp 1.20 For Mac
Hi all, I am wondering what SSD to get for my mid 2009 MacBook Pro. I have been using a SSD in my desktop for over a year now, and loving it. ( time flies when you're having fun, eh? And I really need to upgrade my 5400 RPM snail inside my MBP, which is too slow to do anything useful.
The other surprising result from CNET’s benchmark numbers is that the new MacBook Air 13″ i5 seems to be the equal of the current MacBook Pro 13″ in terms of media processing. This is very impressive, given the Pro’s CPU runs at a base speed of 2.3 GHz, while the Air’s CPU runs at a base speed of 1.7 GHz. I have been researching SSD's for MBP's for quite awhile now, and have seen alot of speculation, so I would really appreciate some feedback from those of you who have actually been there and done that. I have mainly been researching the OCZ Vertex 3 SSD's. My MBP sys info says.
From my understanding, a fast SSD will push the link speed up from 1.5 to 3 Gbps? I will be using this for work, so I will need Bootcamp (win7) as well as OS X, so I am planning on getting at least 256 GB (238 GB) My current HDD is 500GB, so this will be a major downgrade in size, but I'm only worried about additional space for iPhoto etc, not hollywood multimedia. I will partition it as about 100GB for windows, and the rest for OS X. My main concerns are:. Will it even work? (I understand that it may be limited a bit, but that is not my concern. I'm sure the limit will be neglegible compared to the limit of the 5400 RPM broken donkey anyway.).
Is it compatibile with Bootcamp? How can I tell? If it's not, can I tweak it somehow to make it compatible?. Will it support TRIM, under windows and OS X?.
Which is the best one for me, that is currently easily available in SA?. Should I rather go for a cheaper slower bigger one? (I still want 3yr warranty though). I see that Esquire only has the Vertex 4 in 256 GB, for R3k.
Will that work? I don't see any people using vertex 4 + mbp 2009 combo on youtube. What else should I look for?
It will work, provided we're talking about the hard drive bay. If you're going for the optibay approach, it may be more complicated. Your MBP clearly has SATA II, but that' doesn't preclude a SATA III SSD from working, it will just run at SATA II speed.
Buy it anyway: it's newer and more efficient technology, it will probably last longer too. Bootcamp just sets up the partitioning for you (MBR embedded in GPT) so that you can install Windows, and a few more supportive things.
It does not care what kind of drive you run it on. It won't support TRIM out of the box.
Google 'OS X trim enabler'. OCZ Vertex 4 works in mid 2009 MacBook Pro!!! Interesting to hear about the sammy I received my Vertex 4 on friday evening, and after backing everything up, popped it in. Installation was pretty straight forward, I also installed win7 in Bootcamp without a problem, yay!

It's soo fast, with the broken donkey 5400rpm it took OS X 1:30 min to restart, now it takes just 16 seconds! Boot time is as little as 13 seconds! Applications like Safari and iTunes are starting instantly.
Xcode takes a bit longer, but its still waay faster than before. It scores 7.2 under win7 WEI I will post details of how I installed it later, haven't quite finished installing everything yet. Here's some exact steps of how I set it up: Items used:.
OCZ Vertex 4, 256GB (SATA 3). MacBook Pro mid 2009 (SATA 2). Mac OS X Snow Leopard DVD. Windows 7 Ultimate x64 DVD.
Downloadable software: (Mac OS X Lion, MacOSXUpdCombo10.6.8.dmg, MacOSXUpdCombo10.7.4.dmg) Steps: 1. Install “Mac OS X Snow Leopard” (if it doesn't list the SSD to install, go to disk utility, and select the SSD, and click erase) 2.
Setup Bootcamp (Install asap, to be sure it works) 3. Start win7 (says can’t install to FAT, so format as NTFS) 4. Install win7 (very slow, took ages) 5. Install “Mac OS X 10.6.8 Update Combo v1.1” (MacOSXUpdCombo10.6.8.dmg) 6. Install “Mac OS X Lion” (copy app to hdd/ssd first) 7. Install “OS X Lion Update 10.7.4 (Client Combo) “ (MacOSXUpdCombo10.7.4.dmg) 8.
